August 11, 2009 :: DU Meter 4.14 has been released

DU Meter 4.14 is a minor bug-fixing and compatibility update which is free for all current DU Meter 4.x users. Changes in this release are:

* Compatibility updates for Windows 7 and Windows Server 2008 R2.
* Compatibility updates for TweakMASTER 3.0.
* Bug fixed: Sorting by the wrong column in totals.
* Bug fixed: Short period alert actions are not being run.

June 9, 2008 :: DU Meter 4.01 has been released

DU Meter 4.01 is a maintenance release. I does not introduce any major new features, however it provides compatibility updates for Windows XP SP3, Windows Vista SP1 and Windows Server 2008, as well as fixes for numerous issues discovered since the release of version 4.0. This update is free for all current DU Meter 4.0 users. Among many issues fixed in 4.01 release are:

* Numerous issues in DU Meter service fixed, resulting in more robust startup and automatic restart of the service if needed.
* Failure to start in DU Meter monitor has been resolved.
* Several issues related to backup and restore functions are corrected.
* Stopwatch overflow on large data transfers corrected.
* Several instances of DU Meter on taskbar - fixed.
* Export of reports was missing last day or hour in some cases - fixed.
* Numerous speed optimizations for lower CPU consumption.

DU Meter 4.0 is nearly a complete rewrite of DU Meter. Here are some of the new and improved features:

* Greatly improved user interface: All DU Meter windows and dialogs were re-worked, for better usability and aesthetics.
* DU Meter mini mode: Quickly switch to mini mode to preserve your screen real estate.
* Reduced latency and improved precision: In DU Meter 4.0, graph latency is reduced by 500ms in average. Also, DU Meter Stopwatch precision is enhanced.
* Finer granularity of saved historic data: DU Meter 4.0 uses a real database engine, which allows for finer granularity of reports and alerts. Hourly network traffic reports are available.
* Improved network traffic reports: DU Meter 4.0 has fully resizeable and sortable traffic reports, which can be exported to many different file formats (XML and Adobe PDF were added in this version, and reports in other formats have been improved too).
* Charting capability: The DU Meter 4.0 reports module includes a customizable network traffic volume chart.
* Periodic reports auto-generation: DU Meter can now generate reports automatically, either hourly, daily or monthly.
* Greatly expanded alerts capability: long and short term, more traffic or less, incoming, outgoing or combined traffic, time span from seconds to month.
* Receive alerts via e-mail: DU Meter 4.0 can deliver traffic volume alerts via email. Great for “set and forget” parental control.
* Better selection of monitored network interfaces: Several network interfaces can be selected at once, full compatibility DU Meter Screenshots with IPv6 networks, and simplified selection of interfaces on Windows Vista, which defaults to all adapters but does not count the same traffic twice.
* Full Windows Vista compatibility: DU Meter 4.0 is fully compatible with Windows Vista, including running under limited user account, and works correctly when User Account Control (UAC) is enabled.
* Windows sidebar gadget: DU Meter 4.0 includes a gadget for Windows Sidebar (part of Windows Vista) which allows seamless integration with your desktop.
* DU Meter system service: DU Meter 4.0 employs a Windows system service to collect network traffic statistics. Therefore it will work correctly even if nobody is using the computer, or when the DU Meter application is not running, or when several people are using the same computer at once.
* Improved security model: When the user lacks administrative privileges, system-wide DU Meter settings cannot be changed. Therefore secure installation of DU Meter is possible, which, along with delivery of network traffic alerts, allows for unobtrusive and privacy-sensitive parental or management control.
* Database management: Backup and restore data, or delete portions of the data stored in the DU Meter database.
* Improved presentation: A color scheme which blends better with Windows XP or Vista desktop, including better use of screen real estate.
* Better integration with other programs: The DU Meter engine can be used by other 3rd party programs, via COM interfaces.
* Still light system resources usage: Despite all these improvements, DU Meter still takes very little system resources
* Many other improvements and bug fixes.

WinRAR is a powerful archive manager (Win32, Linux, Mac). RAR files can usually compress content by 8 percent to 15 percent more than ZIP files can. WinRAR is a powerful compression tool with many integrated additional functions to help you organize your compressed archives. It can backup your data and reduce size of email attachments, decompress RAR, ZIP and other files downloaded from Internet and create new archives in RAR and ZIP file format.

WinRAR puts you ahead of the crowd when it comes to compression. By consistently creating smaller archives, WinRAR is often faster than the competition. This will save you disc space, transmission costs AND valuable working time as well. WinRAR is ideal for multimedia files. WinRAR automatically recognizes and selects the best compression method. The special compression algorithm compresses multimedia files, executables and object libraries particularly well.

What’s NEW:

1. WinRAR version for Windows x64 is available. If you use Windows x64, it is strongly recommended to install 64 bit WinRAR version. It provides a higher performance and better shell integration than 32 bit version.

2. RAR compression speed is improved for multi-core and multi-CPU systems. This improvement is most noticeable in Windows Vista and Windows 7 operating systems.

3. “Remove duplicate folders from extraction path” option in “Settings/Compression” dialog is replaced by more universal “Remove redundant folders from extraction path” option. This option will eliminate redundant archive name based folders from extraction path if you unpack an archive with “Extract to DestName\” context menu command and if archive root folder contains only one folder and no files.

4. Changes in “Extraction path and options” dialog:
a) “New folder” button creates a new subfolder in currently selected folder;
b) F2 key renames a selected folder in the folders tree;
c) F5 key updated the tree pane contents;
d) Del key removes a selected folder in the folders tree.

5. You can enable “Show seconds” option in “Settings/File list” dialog if you wish to see seconds in file dates in file list in WinRAR shell.

6. “Where to check for SFX archives” options group in “Settings/Integration/Context menus items” dialog lets you to control processing of SFX archives in context menus. For example, if you frequently right click “.exe” files on slow network disks, you can turn off “Network disks” options to minimize the delay before displaying the context menu.

7. If you sort files by name in the file list in WinRAR shell, WinRAR will use the new logical file name sorting, same as in Windows Explorer, considering digits in file names by their numerical value. So files will be sorted as 1.txt, 2.txt, 10.txt instead of previous 1.txt, 10.txt, 2.txt. This new sort behavior is available in Windows XP Service Pack 2 and newer.

8. Ctrl+W key combination can be used to close the main WinRAR window also as WinRAR viewer windows. “View as Windows text” shortcut in WinRAR viewer changed from Ctrl+W to Ctrl+I.

9. New command line switch -r- disables recursion completely. So ‘rar a -r- arc dirname’ command will add only the empty dirname folder and ignore its contents. By default, if dirname does not include wildcards, RAR adds its contents even if -r switch is not specified.

10. If used when extracting, the new command line switch -ai forces RAR to ignore file attributes. When using this switch, extracted files will always have attributes assigned by operating system to a newly created file by default.

11. If output file name is not specified in “cw” command, console RAR will send comment data to stdout.

12. When compressing stdin data with -si switch, RAR sets modification time of archived entry to current system time. Previous RAR versions did not fill this field, resulting in meaningless modification time for stdin.

13. Message displayed when you place the mouse cursor on WinRAR tray icon includes the archive name now. Previously only time left and total percent were displayed for archiving operations.

14. New ‘Shutdown’ variable in ‘Software\WinRAR\Policy’ registry key allows to disable “Turn PC off when done” option for security reasons. Read “Configuration settings/Registry variables” for more details.

15. Better shell extension performance. Now WinRAR context menu will be more responsive when working with thousands of selected files.

16. Improved compatibility with high DPI Windows display mode.

17. Bugs fixed:
a) WinRAR could fail to open tar or tar.gz archive if such archive contained a file larger than 8 GB; b) WinRAR context menu did not work properly in Windows 7 beta if icons in context menus were enabled and user clicked a file inside of Windows 7 Library folder;
c) previous WinRAR versions failed to rename files having 5 or more continuous spaces in the name. WinRAR shell does not display such spaces for safety reasons, because they can hide an actual file extension. But this security measure prevented the rename command to work properly.
